With the sun shining bright in the sky and balmy summer evenings upon us, it’s time to dust off the flip flops and crack open the summer wardrobe. It’s also time to get your skin prepped and primed so it can look it’s best. While the warm weather is welcome, this extra dose of sunshine means you must be extra vigilant with your skin in order to ensure it remains healthy. Check out these tips from The Handmade Soap Company to discover ways of keeping your skin looking fresh and healthy this summer.
Don’t Forget The Basics
While the extra sunshine may feel great on your skin, the UV rays it produces can be quite harmful to the body. You should always apply a sun protection factor (spf) to your entire body before leaving the house to ensure an adequate layer of protection. An adequate amount equating to a teaspoon sized application for your face and a shot glass sized amount for the rest of the body. You can even layer it over your body lotion to ensure complete sun protection. Most importantly don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours or immediately after swimming, washing and towelling. Avoid the sun when it is at its hottest, seek shade, protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses and don’t forget to protect your scalp by wearing a hat.
To remove dull/dry skin and even out texture, exfoliate your entire body using a natural sponge or loofah. If you require something a touch more abrasive, apply a concoction of sugar scrub mixed with some body wash. Lightly massage this fragrant blend of natural oils and sugar in circular motions and rinse off. This method will help buff away any dry and uneven skin resulting in significantly smoother looking and feeling skin.
Once you have exfoliated the skin, it is time to add some much needed moisture into your skins cells. The Handmade Soap Company’s Grapefruit & May Chang and Lemongrass & Bergamot body butters contain soothing Shea butter and natural oils that help nourish and replenish the skin. Upon application, the solid butter turns into an oil thus making it easy for the skin to absorb. It is best applied in the evening time before bed.
Of course the best and most natural way of keeping your skin hydrated is to drink plenty of water, so make sure you are drinking at least 2 litres of water each day. Remember, if you are feeling thirsty, your body is already dehydrated so make sure to keep a bottle of water on hand throughout the day, every day.
If you overexpose your skin to the sun, we highly recommend applying a light body lotion to help cool the skin and prevent it from drying out. Try to find one that contains such ingredients as eucalyptus, mint and thyme as they have natural healing properties that will help soothe minor burns and abrasions. A great tip is to pop a bottle of body lotion in the fridge prior to application so that it is nice and chilled to help cool and sooth your warm skin. Note: always consult a medical professional if you experience moderate to severe sunburn.
Avoid Bug Bites
Unfortunately the mixture of sunshine and warm air creates a perfect breeding environment for mosquitoes and teeny tiny bugs that love nothing more than to sink their tiny teeth into your skin. Luckily there are some natural deterrents available such as lemon, orange and lavender essential oils that mosquitoes absolutely hate. Applying a body wash and lotion that contain any of these essential oils can really help keep the insects at bay. What smells soft and fruity on our skin, smells pungent to the mosquito, but hey we are not complaining!
To keep your home in check, pop a few drops of citrus essential oil into your diffuser and position close to an open window. This scent will help deter any bugs from entering your house. If you are dining al fresco, we recommend lighting a citrus candle to keep any creepy crawlies away from you, your food and guests.
Hopefully these tips from The Handmade Soap Company will help you achieve healthy skin this summer. The handmade soap company only use natural ingredients in their handmade soaps and body lotions so you can be sure your skin is being taken care of. Enjoy the blissful weather and balmy nights!
